Judge Qualifications

The Iowa High School Music Association Commercial Band Festival seeks adjudicators who possess broad expertise in contemporary music performance, music education, and live production. Because commercial music encompasses a wide variety of styles, adjudicators should recognize excellence across genres while evaluating performances based on educational standards, musical achievement, and effective communication with an audience.

Commercial Band Festival adjudicators should demonstrate the following qualifications:

Professional Experience

  • Extensive experience as a music educator, performer, conductor, producer, arranger, or music industry professional.
  • Knowledge of commercial music styles including rock, pop, jazz, country, blues, funk, R&B, gospel, Latin, hip-hop, singer-songwriter, and contemporary popular music.
  • Understanding of both acoustic and amplified performance environments.
  • Experience working with student musicians at the secondary, collegiate, or professional level.

Musical Knowledge

Adjudicators should possess demonstrated expertise in evaluating:

  • Tone quality and sound production
  • Intonation and ensemble balance
  • Rhythm, groove, pulse, and stylistic accuracy
  • Musical interpretation and expression
  • Technical accuracy and execution
  • Improvisation, when applicable
  • Ensemble communication and cohesion
  • Artistic creativity and authenticity

Production and Performance Evaluation

Commercial Band Festival adjudicators should also understand the broader performance experience, including:

  • Stage presence and professionalism
  • Audience communication and engagement
  • Programming and pacing
  • Performance energy appropriate to the selected style
  • Effective use of staging and movement
  • Appropriate use of amplification and sound reinforcement
  • Overall production quality within the resources available to the ensemble

Judges should recognize that production elements are intended to enhance—not replace—strong musical performance.

Educational Philosophy

Commercial Band Festival adjudicators are educators first. They should:

  • Provide constructive, encouraging, and educational feedback.
  • Recognize achievement while identifying opportunities for growth.
  • Evaluate performances objectively without bias toward a particular musical genre or style.
  • Appreciate the educational goals of each ensemble and the unique identity it brings to the performance.
  • Encourage creativity, authenticity, and student ownership of musical performance.

Communication Skills

Judges should be able to:

  • Deliver clear, organized, and professional verbal commentary.
  • Explain ratings using observable musical and performance evidence.
  • Offer practical suggestions that directors and students can apply in future rehearsals and performances.
  • Maintain a respectful and encouraging tone throughout the evaluation process.

Professional Expectations

Commercial Band Festival adjudicators are expected to:

  • Complete all required IHSMA adjudicator certification and annual training.
  • Demonstrate consistency with festival evaluation criteria.
  • Maintain confidentiality and avoid conflicts of interest.
  • Evaluate every ensemble fairly, regardless of school size, instrumentation, equipment, or available resources.
  • Support the educational mission of the Iowa High School Music Association through professionalism, integrity, and respect.

What Commercial Band Festival Judges Evaluate

While musical excellence remains the foundation of every evaluation, Commercial Band Festival adjudicators assess performances from three complementary perspectives:

  • Musicianship – Musical accuracy, tone, rhythm, ensemble cohesion, stylistic authenticity, interpretation, and overall artistic performance.
  • Audience Engagement – The performers’ ability to connect with listeners through confident presentation, communication, stage presence, and authentic performance energy appropriate to the selected repertoire.
  • Overall Performance Production – The effectiveness of programming, pacing, transitions, sound reinforcement, staging, lighting (when utilized), and other production elements that contribute to a cohesive and compelling live performance experience.

The highest-rated performances successfully integrate all three areas, creating an engaging musical experience where strong musicianship remains at the center and production elements serve to enhance—not overshadow—the artistry of the student performers.

What to Expect on Festival Day

The IHSMA Commercial Band Festival is designed to replicate the experience of preparing for and presenting a professional live performance while maintaining the educational focus that defines every Iowa High School Music Association event. Festival day is an opportunity to share your musicianship, creativity, and artistry in front of an audience and receive meaningful feedback from experienced music professionals.

Before You Arrive

Your director will receive your performance schedule, arrival time, and festival logistics prior to the event. Students should:

  • Arrive with their school and remain with their ensemble.
  • Wear the performance attire selected by your director.
  • Bring all required instruments, equipment, music, and personal items.
  • Be prepared to assist with loading and unloading equipment if assigned.
  • Stay hydrated, eat appropriately, and be ready to perform at your scheduled time.

Check-In

Upon arrival, your ensemble will check in with festival staff and be directed through the day’s schedule. Staff and student volunteers will help guide your group through each stage of the festival.

Equipment and Sound Check

Commercial music relies on technology as well as musicianship. Before your performance, your ensemble will have scheduled time to:

  • Set up instruments and equipment.
  • Connect amplifiers, keyboards, electronic instruments, and playback devices as needed.
  • Complete a brief sound check with festival audio personnel.
  • Verify microphone placement and monitor levels.
  • Ensure all technical elements are functioning properly.

The sound check is intended to establish a balanced performance environment—not to rehearse the entire performance.

Performance

When your performance time begins, your ensemble will present its prepared program before an audience and a panel of adjudicators.

During the performance, adjudicators will evaluate:

  • Musical performance and ensemble quality.
  • Stylistic interpretation.
  • Stage presence and professionalism.
  • Audience communication and engagement.
  • Overall production and presentation.

Festival performances are intended to reflect the experience of presenting a polished live concert.

Adjudicator Feedback

Following your performance, adjudicators will provide educational commentary highlighting:

  • Musical strengths.
  • Performance highlights.
  • Areas for continued growth.
  • Suggestions for future performances.

The purpose of adjudication is to support your development as a musician and performer while recognizing the work your ensemble has invested throughout the season.

Throughout the Day

Students are expected to:

  • Follow directions from festival staff.
  • Respect performance schedules and time limits.
  • Support fellow performers with positive audience behavior.
  • Treat the venue, equipment, and facilities with care.
  • Represent their school with professionalism and integrity.

The Festival Experience

Unlike many traditional concerts, the Commercial Band Festival celebrates a wide variety of musical styles and performance approaches. Every ensemble brings its own artistic identity, instrumentation, and creative vision. No two performances are expected to look exactly alike.

The festival encourages originality while emphasizing the musical fundamentals that define outstanding live performance.

Why Festival Day Matters

Festival day is more than a performance—it is an authentic learning experience. You’ll perform in a professionally supported venue, receive feedback from experienced music professionals, and develop skills that extend beyond the classroom.

Whether your future includes performing professionally, teaching, producing music, working in the entertainment industry, or simply continuing music as a lifelong passion, the Commercial Band Festival provides valuable experience in collaboration, preparation, communication, creativity, and live performance.

Your goal is simple: prepare thoroughly, perform confidently, support your fellow musicians, and enjoy the opportunity to share your music with others.

Performance Format and Flow

The IHSMA Commercial Band Festival is designed to provide an authentic live performance experience while giving every ensemble the opportunity to learn and grow through immediate educational feedback. Festival day follows a structured schedule that allows each group to prepare, perform, and participate in a post-performance clinic.

Arrival and Load-In

Upon arrival at the Iowa State Center, your ensemble will check in with festival staff and be directed to the designated unloading area. Student and staff volunteers will assist with traffic flow and help keep the festival running on schedule.

After unloading equipment, your ensemble will move to its assigned preparation area.

Warm-Up

Each ensemble will have scheduled time in a warm-up space before performing. This is an opportunity to:

  • Tune instruments and check equipment.
  • Warm up voices and instruments.
  • Review key musical passages.
  • Prepare mentally and physically for the performance.

This time is intended for final preparation rather than a full rehearsal.

Performance in Summit AG Hall

When your performance time arrives, your ensemble will move into the newly renovated Summit AG Hall for its festival performance.

Your performance will take place on a professional concert stage with full sound reinforcement and production support. During your performance, adjudicators will evaluate:

  • Musical performance and ensemble musicianship.
  • Stylistic authenticity.
  • Ensemble communication and cohesion.
  • Stage presence and audience engagement.
  • Overall production, pacing, and presentation.

The goal is to present a polished, confident live performance that reflects your ensemble’s preparation and artistic vision.

Educational Clinic

Following your performance, your ensemble will move to a secondary clinic room within the Scheman Building.

Rather than simply receiving comments after leaving the stage, you’ll have the opportunity to work directly with one of the festival clinicians. During the clinic, the adjudicator may:

  • Reinforce strengths demonstrated during the performance.
  • Address musical concepts and performance techniques.
  • Work through selected excerpts from your program.
  • Offer suggestions for improving ensemble sound, style, communication, and stage presentation.
  • Answer questions from students and directors.

The clinic is designed to be interactive, educational, and immediately applicable to your future rehearsals and performances.

Load-Out

After the clinic concludes, your ensemble will return to the designated loading area to pack equipment and prepare for departure. Students should assist with loading equipment, ensure the clinic space is left clean, and follow directions from festival staff.

The Complete Experience

Each ensemble’s festival experience follows the same sequence:

  1. Check-in and load-in.
  2. Warm-up and final preparation.
  3. Live performance in the newly renovated Summit AG Hall.
  4. Educational clinic in a Scheman Building classroom.
  5. Load-out and departure.

This format mirrors the professional performance process—prepare, perform, reflect, and improve. By combining a high-quality performance venue with immediate instructional feedback, the Commercial Band Festival provides an experience that is both artistically rewarding and educationally meaningful.

What Adjudicators Are Listening/Looking For

Commercial music performance is about much more than playing the right notes. IHSMA Commercial Band Festival adjudicators evaluate the complete live performance experience, recognizing ensembles that combine strong musicianship, artistic authenticity, audience connection, and professional presentation.

Above all, adjudicators are looking for performances that communicate music with confidence, energy, and purpose.

Musicianship

Musicianship remains the foundation of every evaluation. Adjudicators listen for:

  • Accurate notes and rhythms.
  • Consistent tone quality.
  • Solid intonation.
  • Strong ensemble balance and blend.
  • Steady tempo and rhythmic groove.
  • Precision and synchronization between performers.
  • Musical expression and phrasing.
  • Stylistic authenticity appropriate to the selected repertoire.
  • Dynamic contrast and musical interpretation.
  • Technical proficiency on each instrument.

Whether your ensemble performs rock, jazz, pop, country, funk, R&B, Latin, singer-songwriter, or another commercial style, judges want to hear musicians who understand and perform convincingly within that genre.

Ensemble Performance

Commercial bands succeed because every member contributes to a unified musical performance. Adjudicators observe:

  • Communication among performers.
  • Confidence and preparation.
  • Ensemble cohesion.
  • Leadership within the group.
  • Smooth transitions between selections.
  • Appropriate pacing throughout the performance.

Strong ensembles perform as one musical unit rather than as individual performers sharing the same stage.

Audience Engagement

Successful commercial performers connect with their audience. Judges look for performers who:

  • Project confidence.
  • Demonstrate authentic stage presence.
  • Engage naturally with the audience.
  • Perform with energy appropriate to the music.
  • Communicate enjoyment and commitment to the performance.
  • Maintain professionalism throughout the entire set.

Audience engagement should feel genuine. Every style of music communicates differently, and adjudicators recognize that effective stage presence varies from one genre to another.

Production and Presentation

Commercial music performances often include production elements that enhance the musical experience. Adjudicators consider:

  • Professional stage setup.
  • Efficient equipment changes and transitions.
  • Effective use of microphones and amplification.
  • Appropriate sound balance.
  • Performance flow and pacing.
  • Visual presentation.
  • Lighting or multimedia elements, when included.
  • Overall organization and professionalism.

Production elements should support the music rather than distract from it. Outstanding performances place musicianship at the center while using technology and staging to enhance the audience’s experience.

Authenticity

One of the unique aspects of the Commercial Band Festival is that there is no single “correct” style of performance.

Judges recognize and value:

  • Artistic individuality.
  • Creative programming.
  • Honest interpretation of the selected repertoire.
  • Performances that reflect the identity of the ensemble.

An outstanding jazz combo, rock band, country group, contemporary worship ensemble, indie band, or pop vocal group can all achieve the highest level of success by performing their chosen style with excellence and authenticity.

Professionalism

Throughout the performance, adjudicators also observe:

  • Preparation and organization.
  • Respect for the performance schedule.
  • Appropriate behavior on and off stage.
  • Care of equipment and facilities.
  • Positive interaction with festival staff and fellow performers.

Professionalism is an important part of every successful live performance.

The Bottom Line

Adjudicators are not looking for the biggest sound system, the most elaborate lighting, or the flashiest performance. They are looking for ensembles that communicate music effectively through excellent preparation, strong musicianship, authentic performance, and meaningful audience connection.

The most successful performances are those in which musicianship, audience engagement, and production work together to create a memorable live musical experience. When the music is performed with confidence, skill, and authenticity, everything else supports that artistic foundation.

Behavior and Professionalism Expectations

The IHSMA Commercial Band Festival is intended to reflect the expectations of both a professional live performance and an educational music festival. Every student represents their school, director, and community while contributing to an environment where all performers can succeed.

Professionalism is demonstrated through your preparation, attitude, respect for others, and commitment to excellence.

Be Prepared

Professional musicians arrive ready to perform. Students should:

  • Arrive on time and remain with their ensemble.
  • Know their music thoroughly before festival day.
  • Bring all required instruments, equipment, music, cables, accessories, and personal items.
  • Be ready to assist with loading, setup, and load-out.
  • Follow the schedule established by festival staff and your director.

Preparation allows the festival to remain on schedule and creates the best experience for every participating ensemble.

Respect the Performance Environment

Every ensemble deserves the opportunity to perform without distraction.

Students should:

  • Listen carefully to festival staff and volunteers.
  • Remain quiet during performances and clinics.
  • Silence or put away mobile phones and other electronic devices unless they are part of the performance.
  • Respect the performance venue, rehearsal spaces, clinic rooms, and equipment.
  • Leave every space clean and ready for the next ensemble.

Demonstrate Professional Stage Conduct

Whether on stage or backstage, your actions contribute to your ensemble’s performance.

Students are expected to:

  • Enter and exit the stage efficiently.
  • Maintain focus throughout the performance.
  • Follow directions from sound engineers, clinicians, and festival personnel.
  • Treat fellow performers with respect and encouragement.
  • Accept unexpected challenges calmly and professionally.

Live performances rarely go exactly as planned. Professional musicians adapt, solve problems, and continue performing with confidence.

Support Your Ensemble

A successful performance depends on every member contributing to the group’s success.

Students should:

  • Encourage and support one another.
  • Share responsibility for setup and equipment.
  • Communicate respectfully during rehearsals, clinics, and performances.
  • Celebrate the accomplishments of the entire ensemble rather than focusing only on individual recognition.

Represent Your School Well

Your conduct reflects not only on you but also on your music program and school community.

Students should demonstrate:

  • Courtesy toward other ensembles.
  • Respect for adjudicators and clinicians.
  • Appreciation for volunteers, event staff, and venue personnel.
  • Integrity and honesty in every aspect of participation.

Professional behavior builds a positive reputation for your ensemble and your school.

During the Educational Clinic

The post-performance clinic is an important part of the festival experience.

Students are encouraged to:

  • Listen attentively to the clinician’s comments.
  • Participate actively when asked.
  • Ask thoughtful questions.
  • Accept feedback with an open mind.
  • View suggestions as opportunities for continued growth.

The clinic is designed to help you become a stronger musician and performer.

Enjoy the Experience

The Commercial Band Festival celebrates creativity, collaboration, and live music-making. While performing at a high level is important, so is enjoying the opportunity to share music with others.

Support other ensembles, learn from the performances you hear, and take pride in the work your group has accomplished.

A Professional Mindset

The most successful ensembles combine excellent musicianship with outstanding professionalism. Directors and adjudicators consistently notice students who are dependable, respectful, adaptable, and engaged.

Bring your best performance, support your teammates, respect everyone you encounter, and approach the day with enthusiasm. Those qualities will serve you well—not only at the Commercial Band Festival, but in every future musical opportunity.

Why This NEW Festival Matters

The IHSMA Commercial Band Festival represents an exciting new opportunity for Iowa students to showcase a different kind of musical excellence. While traditional concert ensembles remain a cornerstone of music education, today’s students also perform in rock bands, pop groups, jazz combos, singer-songwriter ensembles, worship bands, contemporary vocal groups, and other commercial music settings. This festival recognizes and celebrates those experiences.

Commercial music is one of the fastest-growing areas of music education, higher education, and the music industry. The skills developed through these ensembles are directly connected to careers in performance, recording, songwriting, production, audio engineering, music business, and arts entrepreneurship.

Expanding Opportunities

The Commercial Band Festival broadens the ways students can participate in music education by providing a statewide performance experience for ensembles that may not fit within traditional festival models.

The festival encourages schools to develop new performance opportunities that reflect the interests and talents of today’s students while maintaining the high educational standards that define IHSMA events.

  • Collaborate as a small ensemble.

  • Present a polished live performance from beginning to end.

These are the same skills expected in professional performance venues, recording sessions, touring ensembles, and collegiate commercial music programs.

Creativity and Artistic Identity

Commercial music places a strong emphasis on individuality. Every ensemble has the opportunity to develop its own sound, style, and artistic voice.

Students are encouraged to make thoughtful musical decisions, explore creative programming, and perform with authenticity while honoring the musical traditions of the genres they represent.

Learning Beyond the Performance

The festival is about more than earning a rating. Through adjudication and post-performance clinics, students receive immediate feedback from experienced educators and industry professionals.

These conversations help performers refine their musicianship, strengthen their live performance skills, and gain new ideas they can apply in future rehearsals and performances.

Building Skills for the Future

Whether music becomes your career or remains a lifelong passion, the experiences gained through commercial music are widely transferable.

Students develop:

  • Leadership and teamwork.
  • Communication skills.
  • Creative problem-solving.

  • Professional rehearsal and performance habits.

These skills are valuable in college, the workplace, and virtually every profession.

Whether students pursue music professionally or simply enjoy performing throughout their lives, the Commercial Band Festival helps develop the confidence, collaboration, discipline, and artistic skills that will benefit them well beyond high school.
